US President Donald Trump says he will impose additional tariffs on China, from Tuesday, if Beijing does not withdraw its 34% retaliatory tariffs on the US.

The additional tariffs on Beijing would be of 50%, Trump says.

China announced on Friday that it would be imposing such tariffs on Washington after the White House said that from 9 April it would put 34% levies on all goods coming from Beijing.

US President Donald Trump has cancelled a state visit to Denmark after the nation's prime minister said Greenland was not for sale to the US.

The president was scheduled to visit on 2 September, at the invitation of Denmark's Queen Margrethe II.

Then last week Mr Trump suggested the US was interested in buying Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen described the suggestion as "absurd" and said she hoped Mr Trump was not being serious.

Donald Trump's pause on a suite of tariffs that shook global markets this week has been controversial and drawn accusations of market manipulation, but may simply be a hardball tactic to recalibrate the world economy to Washington's advantage.
Trump's reciprocal tariffs first struck after midnight on Wednesday, and sent markets plummeting. He was quick to post to his Truth Social platform after the start of morning trade, telling investors to "BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!" and, minutes later, "THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!."
Within hours, he'd reversed course: While the US will maintain a universal 10% levy on imports at the border, a swath of additional taxes — for some nations as high as 50% — were lifted.

LIVE: Trump Pauses High Tariffs for 90 Days for All Nations Except China | Vantage with Palki Sharma | N18G

US President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day pause on "retaliatory" tariffs for over 75 countries, merely 12 hours after his 'Liberation Day' tariffs came into effect. He has now kept a baseline tariff of 10% for all the nations that reached out to the US, seeking a trade deal. Trump has, however, escalated the trade war with China, and has imposed a 125% tariff on Beijing. This came after China imposed an 84% tariff on US, in retaliation to Trump's earlier-announced 104% tariffs on China. Trump had initially levied a total 54% tariff on Beijing, which was quick to retaliate with a 34% tariff on the US.
Almost four hours before formally announcing the tariff pause on Wednesday, Trump had posted on his social media platform Truth Social: "This is a great time to buy!" This sent the stock market shooting up, which had been largely plunging since 'Black Monday'. But the traders still seem uncertain, with the markets still shaking on Thursday. The White House has maintained that this 90-day period shall be used to secure trade deals with US trade partners.
Meanwhile, the tariffs on Canada and Mexico, along with the 25% import tax on automobiles, still remain unchanged as they were not part of Trump's April 2 'Liberation Day' tariff plan.

A sudden social media post from Donald Trump has turned all his tariff plans upside down, again. "Based on the lack of respect China has shown to the world markets", he declared, "I am hearby raising the tariff charged by the United States of America to 125%".

As for the countries which he said had not "at my strong suggestion retaliated in any way, shape or form...I have authorised a 90 day pause and a substantially lowered reciprocal tariff during this period of 10%".


It took several questions to the White House press secretary to establish that this was a universal flat rate - and not on top of the 10% already imposed.

China is continuing to seek adequate responses as it remains the target of massive US trade tariffs despite US President Donald Trump's turnaround decision on Wednesday to pause the hefty levies he had just imposed on dozens of other countries. Trump has raised the tariff on Chinese imports to the US to 125%, up from the 104% levy that went into force on Wednesday. Beijing, in its turn, may well once more up the 84% tariffs it applied to US imports on Wednesday in retaliation to Trump's initial move. It has vowed to "fight to the end" in the trade war that is rapidly escalating between the world's two top economies. China says it has held talks with the European Union and Malaysia on enhancing trade ties in response to the friction with the US. It also said it had filed a protest with the World Trade Organization (WTO), complaining of "bullying" tactics by the Trump administration.
Trump, who says he raised the tariffs on Chinese imports in response to China's "lack of respect" for global markets, has insisted that a trade agreement will be reached with Beijing. "A deal's going to be made with China," Trump said, while adding that China's leaders "don't quite know how to go about it." China is the second biggest provider of imports to the US after Mexico.

China has called on the United States on Thursday to meet it "halfway" as a trade war between the world's two top economies gains momentum, but promised to "fight to the end" if no compromise can be reached. "The door to dialogue is open, but it must be based on mutual respect and conducted in an equal manner," Commerce Ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian told a regular press briefing. The use of pressure, threats and blackmail was not the right way to deal with China, He said. She warned that US tariffs on international trading partners would "severely impact the stability of the global economic order." China would continue to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests, she said. China's Foreign Ministry also warned that the US tariffs were harmful to the whole world. The tariffs "seriously damage the rules-based multilateral trading system, and seriously impact the stability of the global economic order," Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said. "This is a blatant act that goes against the will of the world and goes against the whole world," he added.
