Donald Trump's pause on a suite of tariffs that shook global markets this week has been controversial and drawn accusations of market manipulation, but may simply be a hardball tactic to recalibrate the world economy to Washington's advantage.
Trump's reciprocal tariffs first struck after midnight on Wednesday, and sent markets plummeting. He was quick to post to his Truth Social platform after the start of morning trade, telling investors to "BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!" and, minutes later, "THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!."
Within hours, he'd reversed course: While the US will maintain a universal 10% levy on imports at the border, a swath of additional taxes — for some nations as high as 50% — were lifted.

United States President Donald Trump has announced he will raise tariffs against China to 125 percent, in a rapidly escalating trade war that has seen China already retaliate with 84 percent tariffs, effective April 10.
Trump has also sought to reward countries that negotiated in the wake of his latest round of tariffs, which took effect at 12:01am EST on Wednesday (04:01 GMT).
He offered a 90-day pause and a lowered reciprocal tariffs of 10 percent to other countries outside of China, which sent markets surging after days of slumping numbers.
China’s Finance Ministry says the US’s escalation of tariffs is a “mistake on top of a mistake”, and the European Union says it approved “trade countermeasures” that will go into effect on April 15.

US Election 2024 LIVE: Polls Indicate Harris Gaining Big Early Voting Lead Despite Trump's Push

With just three days left for the November 5 polls, the 2024 US Presidential election has already set records for pre-Election Day votes. While Republicans have been excitedly urging people to take part in early voting, things are looking great for Vice President Kamala Harris. Pollings are now suggesting that the Democratic presidential nominee is significantly ahead among those who have already voted either through absentee, mail-in or in-person ballots. Recent national polling from ABC News/Ipsos, The New York Times/Sienna College and CNN show that Harris is leading Trump by 62 per cent to 33 per cent; 59 per cent to 40 per cent; and 61 per cent to 36 per cent respectively.

The White House has clarified that the tariffs imposed on Chinese goods coming into the US stands at 145%.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that he was hiking the levy to 125%, but the administration has now said that that figure did not include a pre-existing tariff of 20% which was imposed on countries the US said produces the drug fentanyl.

European and Asian markets saw gains on Thursday, but US shares slumped seconds after the market opened; with The Dow Jones and S&P 500 indexes down over 4%, and the Nasdaq as much as 5% lower.
